Book type (bitSetting):   

The ASUS BC-06B1ST does not support automatic bitsetting.

Writing technique     

Now it’s time to take a closer look at the write technology used by the ASUS BC-06B1ST:

For these tests we used CD-DVD Speed and wrote a full disc at the drives maximum speed.

CD Recordable:

According to the specifications of the ASUS BC-06B1ST, it should be able to write CD-R media at a maximum speed of 48X on supported media.

The ASUS BC-06B1ST used CAV, (Constant Angular Velocity), to write at its maximum speed of 48X.  This gives an average speed of 37.02X with a total write time of 2 minutes and 43 seconds.

For comparison we have made the following table: 

The AUSU BC-06B1ST is the fastest burner when comparing write times.

CD-Rewritable

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses Z-CLV (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write CD-RW media at its maximum speed of 32X, with an average write speed of 25.44X and writing time of 3 minutes 33 seconds.

For comparison we have made the following table: 

The ASUS BC-06B1ST is one of the fastest of our test drives at writing CD-RW.

16x DVD+R

The ASUS BC-06B1ST is able to write DVD+R media at a maximum speed of 16X.

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to write DVD+R at the maximum supported speed of 16X. This results in an average write speed of 11.99X and a writing time of just 5 minutes and 20 seconds.

The BC-06B1ST is the fastest when we look at overall write times.

16x DVD-R

The ASUS BC-06B1ST should be able to write DVD-R media at a maximum speed of 12X.

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) to write DVD-R at the maximum supported speed of 12X. This results in an average write speed of 11.99X and a writing time of just 5 minutes and 38 seconds.

As you can see the ASUS BC-06B1ST performs on average looking at write times when compared with our other tested drives.

8x DVD+RW

According to the specification of the ASUS BC-06B1ST it should be able to write to DVD+RW at a maximum of 8X.

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses Z-CLV (Zone-Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD+RW at 8X. The average speed is 7.51X and total writing time is 7 minutes and 47 seconds.

For comparison we have made the following table: 

The ASUS BC-06B1ST performs on average with other 6X capable drives.

6x DVD-RW

According to the specification of the ASUS BC-06B1ST it should be able to write to DVD-RW at a maximum of 6X.

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses Z-CLV (Zone Constant Linear Velocity) to write DVD-RW at 6x. The average speed is 5.76X and total writing time is 10 minutes and 44 seconds.

As you can see the ASUS BC-06B1ST performs on average when compared with the other drives we have tested.

Let’s take a look at DVD±R DL writing techniques……

8x DVD+R DL 

According to the specifications of the ASUS BC-06B1ST, it should be able to write DVD+R DL at a maximum speed of 8X, however at this time our available Memorex DL media is only capable of writing at 4X.   Here are our results.

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses CLV, (Constant Linear Velocity), to write at a speed of 4X. This gives an average speed of 4.00X and a total writing time of 26 minutes and 34 seconds.

8x DVD-R DL

According to the specifications of the ASUS BC-06B1ST, it should be able to write DVD-R DL at a maximum speed of 8X.  However, at this we do not have any of the high speed DVD-R media so we will test using 4X media.

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses CLV, (Constant Linear Velocity), to write at 4X with this media with an average speed of 4.00X and a total write time of 27 minutes and 06 seconds.

For comparison we have made the following table:

The ASUS BC-06B1ST performed on average with our other tested drives for DVD±R DL; and the slower writing to DVD±R DL is most likely due to the review team not having high speed ±R DL media to test with at this time.

DVD-RAM  

The specifications for the ASUS BC-06B1ST state that the drive is capable of writing DVD-RAM at 12X.  Let’s take a look at the write strategy for this media.

12X DVD-RAM Writing

The ASUS BC-06B1ST uses P-CAV (Partial Constant Angular Velocity), to write at is maximum speed of 12X.  This gives an average speed of 4.98X and a total writing time of 5 minutes and 39 seconds.

Summary

The ASUS BC-06B1ST performed well with our writing tests.  We regret that we do not have any DVD-R DL capable of writing at the drives rated speed to test with at this time. Let’s move on ahead and check out the reading performance on the next page…..
