It is not often that you get something extra for nothing in this world. The fact that the OCZ Technology Vertex series of SSD drives are firmware upgradable is a big bonus. Vertex firmware 1199 adds faster sequential writing speeds to an already very impressive SSD drive, and this is not the end of the story. OCZ Technology have future firmware updates for the Vertex series of drives in the pipeline, which may add new features to the drive, and perhaps further performance enhancements.
The fact that OCZ Technology have managed to improve sequential read/write performance to the Vertex series of drives, without having to sacrifice IOP performance and random writing performance of small files is really quite an achievement.
So how does the new firmware 1199 feel to use when the OCZ Technology Vertex is used as a system drive with an operating system installed and running from the drive?
Well, it’s still as slick and as stable as the original Vertex shipping firmware. There is no great feeling that the drive is faster as an operating system drive. But the superior sequential read/write performance will prove useful for transferring larger files to and from the Vertex series drive or when editing large video files, and there may also be a boost to application loading times.
If you wish to upgrade the firmware on your OCZ Technology Vertex series SSD drive, then please visit OCZ Technology’s support forum for flashing instructions and the firmware update files.
