The K-probe result is very good, but the reading curve shows some problems. This could be due to various reasons; one reason is that we have seen that NEC drives have some slight compatibility problems with Ritek +/-R media for reading. Other reasons could be jitter or reflectivity issues.

No problems with this media, we were able to choose 12x writing speed, but it did never upshift to 12x and wrote the whole disc at 8x.

Overall thoughts: Well, one thing is for sure ‘“ this drive has very good writing quality, among the best, if not THE best. But on the other side it has very poor media compatibility, among the worst if not THE worst. Thus we note down a positive point for writing quality and a negative point for media compatibility.

Re-Writing data:

The Pioneer DVR-109 supports rewriting DVD-RW at 6x and DVD+RW at 8x speed, let us write two discs in Nero CD/DVD speed and Nero Burning ROM to see how fast it is.

Here are the writing results for writing the 6x DVD-RW disc:


 

Pioneer DVR-109 uses CLV writing technology to write the DVD-RW disc at 6x. Total recording time is just below 10 minutes.

And here are the results with 8x DVD+RW writing:

What is this? The drive does not yet support 8x DVD+RW writing? We are already at firmware version 1.50 and no 8x DVD+RW discs are supported? Well, we are quite shocked and quickly note down another negative point…

Writing Quality with DVD Re-Writable discs:

Due to request from our readers we will add a few write quality tests with ReWritable media. Settings and testing procedures are the same as used earlier in this review so you may want to go back and read them if unsure. All discs used for these tests have been written to before, but none have been written to more than 25 times.

To sum it up: Looks like both media compatibility and writing quality still needs to be worked on, not too pleased with these results.

But let us now look at the most interesting aspect of this drive; Double Layer DVD+R and DVD-R Dual layer writing…
