DVD+/-R DL performance

 

DVD+R Double Layer writing speed and compatibility:

The Pioneer DVR-109 supports 6x DVD+R double layer writing speed; let us take a look at writing speed and writing quality.

Testing procedure: We created a new compilation using Nero 6 and wrote it using the Disc-at-once writing method: 


Verbatim DVD+R9 Double layer 2.4x written at 6x. Total writing time is 19 minutes and 11 seconds.

The K-Probe result seems fine, but it failed to read back. Looks like there is still room for improvements.

The disc is at least fully readable unlike the Ricoh and Ritek double layer media. This media should not cause you any problems under normal use.

The Verbatim and Prodisc Double Layer disc worked fine in our standalone player, as long as we set the book type to DVD-ROM.

Seems good, but let us do some additional tests.

As we could see here the book type of the DVD-R DL disc is DVD-R. We tested the disc in several drives, and some could not read the disc; Toshiba SD-R5372 could not detect the disc and NEC ND-3500A recognized the disc as an empty 4Gb DVD-R disc! It worked fine in all drives that support the DVD-R DL format of course, but otherwise it seems to be a hit and miss.

Our pretty new Denver DVD-Player was only able to play the first layer of the disc.

Summary: Verbatim DVD+R DL works excellent with this drive, but most of the others discs have some problems ‘“ this could be due to lower disc quality and not due to a problem with the drive. DVD-R DL works fine as well, except that the compatibility of the DVD-R DL format seems to be inferior compared to the DVD+R DL format.
