Review: Plextor 24/10/40 IDE
Reviewer: Stevieb
Provided by: Plextor Europe
Firmware: version 1.02

Since years Plextor is absolutely dominating the top segment of the CDRW market The popularity of its drives has increased a lot the last years. This is especially due to the very good service and support. Plextor has its name to be innovative and thus regulary bringing complete new drives and technologies into the market. Plextor is one of the well-known brands that made its transfer from scsi drives to Atapi-IDE drives a few years ago. And successfully !

In the meanwhile is this their 4th drive in the IDE series. The first drive was the 8×4x32x followed by the 12×10x32x and finally the 16×10x32x. Everytime they were excellent drives witch gave the user a few more extra’s than the most common regular drives from other brands.

So we are very curious wether this 24×10x40 leaves the compition behind.

Warranty:
A new feature wich is really great , not on the technological level , but as support and feedback is the new 2 year warranty that comes with the drive. (Mind that this is only for Europe). This is making Plextor the only drive supplier that guarantees 2 year full warranty. Only this new item says a lot about the quality of the drive….

The warranty consists out of the following items :

  • If the drive is malfunctioning within two weeks of the purshase Plextor will recollect the drive and replace it with a new one.
  • If the drive shows malfunction after this two weeks and before the end of the second year Plextor will recollect the drive and give 100% warranty on labor and parts…
  • We have never experienced an RMA request wich lasted longer than 2 weeks.
  • Fast and correct handling of RMA procedure.
Conclusion:

Plextor is the absolute market leader concerning feedback and support, fast and correct handling of RMA requests. So if you want service this Plextor is a true must buy!

Excellent and comprehensive review. You leave us with only one question: Where did you get the 1.02 firmware? It is not posted on any of Plextor's websites yet. Please share a link if you can!

What TLA# is on the drive you tested? I have one with TLA#0000 at work and with TLA#0100 at home, didn't have a chance to test any of them with SD2 yet.

Hi! I read your review and found one strange thing; As far as i know, Plextor 1610a does support only RAW reading but no sub codes. According to review you were able to perform sub code reading in LaserLock and SecuRom tests. I have the PX-1610A and haven´t been able to perform sub channel read with CloneCD or BlindRead. Both apps inform that the 1610 is not able to read subs. Am i stupid or why is it not working? I´ve used fm 1.02 and 1.03. With my Toshiba CD-Rom sub codes work fine with both apps. PS. do you have a clue where can i find older firmwares to PX-1610A (1.0, 1.01, 1.02)?

hoi xosak thanks for your test, but it seems that TLA#0100, can't copy protected audio cd's and the TLA#0000 can copy protected audio cd's. I do not know this is true, but it is mentioned on several forums on the internet. Does any body know with what TLA number the test on cdfreaks is made with

I'm using mine for a week now and loving it. My previous burner was a Sony CRX-140s and was OK - but the Plextor is in a different league alltogether! :g

DVD2one is alright, but it needs a new facelift, please looka at dvdshrink for fresh ideas. The software is fast and has many need features and it's free. Don't get me wrong, I care about functionality and quality. Could it be possible for DVD2ONE to implement some of the same features fo DVD Shrink?

Put simply the fastest DVD conversion software you can buy. Seriously. The average Dual Layer movie can be converted in 15-20 MAX. This is on a middle of the road XP1900 cpu. The quality is also just great and is better than DVD Shrink. Being that Shrink is free it not fair to knock it, but if you want to save some time and want better quality use this. The one downside is unlike Shrink it doesn't integrate into nero so you have to burn manually. But when you consider the speed and quality its not that big a deal.
