Writing tests
Writing tests:
Now that we have tested the reading performance we look at the main feature of Plextor, the writing of media
The first test is an integrated write test in CDspeed:
This is a short test that graphically displays the writing speed of the drive on every position of the disc.It finally determines the average writing speed. This test simulates an actual burning, thus no cdr is being lost to perform this test. CD-speed is a freeware utility from Eric Deppe.
The cd-write test from CDspeed.
The result shows that the PX-2410TA initially begins the writing at 16x whereas it changes speeds after 6 minutes to 20x and after 16min to 24x. The overall average writing speed is 22.76x.
Next we took CDMATE from AnChen. This is a new, but very effective program. It combines the flexability of CloneCD with the functionality of Nero. Furthermore it has a lot of tweaks and gives some handy info from your drive and the used media.
CDMate integrates a CD-Rom manager that gives a lot of info from your burner. Let’s have a look at the results.
All the drive info is being displayed.
The exact capacity of the disc is showed.
A thoroughly ATIP-code reading, gives more info than the popular CDR-indentifier…
Our third tests are some test-burnings with 74 and 80 min CDR’s:
The tests were created using Nero Burning Rom V5.5.4.0. First we took some 74min CDR’s afterwards some 80min CDR’s. We selected some different brands (Sony, Infiniti, Discplanet, Tayo Yuden, frosted cdr, hi-space.) When we do our next test with a 24x burner we shall compare these results.
Strange thing. The burning on a 74min CDR took more time then on an 80min CDR.
What we noticed during these burnings was the fact when we enlighted the burned CDR’s we could see a difference in color shade respectively at those points whereas the writing speed increases. Wheter this was an effect due to increased speed or OPC correction we couldn’t determin.
So we experienced 3 different shades of dye color:
Reaction Plextor:
Our drives start off with a certain value of OPC. When the drive determines that this value should be increased it will do this at certain points (6-16-end) The difference in color is not always visible and depends on the type of CDR. This color nuance should give no difference in reflection and should not alter the quality of what is written on the disc.

The next thing we did is testing the write performance and capabilities when making a backup of a protected disc:
Conclusion:
This Plextor is a true dream for everybody who wants to make a personal backup of a copy-protected CD. The right to make a backup within domestic boundries was token from software publishers that wanted to fight the increase of piracy, without taking notice of those who legitimate needed a backup to protect their original from damage.
Anyone who needs to make backup’s for the previously mentioned purpose will find the perfect solution in this Plextor drive.

Excellent and comprehensive review. You leave us with only one question: Where did you get the 1.02 firmware? It is not posted on any of Plextor's websites yet. Please share a link if you can!
Excelent review of this great piece of hardware. I think i am going to get one myself to :4
Firmware 1.02 is not offically out yet. We had permission from Plextor to publish the results of this new firmware before it is offically released. It will be available soon! But we wanted to let u cdfreakers know the results before it is even released!
I make a back up of NHL2002. Firmware 1.01; 16 minutes!!!! The game work perfect. Great burner

What TLA# is on the drive you tested? I have one with TLA#0000 at work and with TLA#0100 at home, didn't have a chance to test any of them with SD2 yet.
Where can I find 1.01 Firmware ?
Tested both drives with TLA #0000 and #0100, firmware 1.02, both copy SD2 fine.
Hi! I read your review and found one strange thing; As far as i know, Plextor 1610a does support only RAW reading but no sub codes. According to review you were able to perform sub code reading in LaserLock and SecuRom tests. I have the PX-1610A and haven´t been able to perform sub channel read with CloneCD or BlindRead. Both apps inform that the 1610 is not able to read subs. Am i stupid or why is it not working? I´ve used fm 1.02 and 1.03. With my Toshiba CD-Rom sub codes work fine with both apps. PS. do you have a clue where can i find older firmwares to PX-1610A (1.0, 1.01, 1.02)?
hoi xosak thanks for your test, but it seems that TLA#0100, can't copy protected audio cd's and the TLA#0000 can copy protected audio cd's. I do not know this is true, but it is mentioned on several forums on the internet. Does any body know with what TLA number the test on cdfreaks is made with
I make a perfect copy of NHL 2002 on my PX_W2410TA tla #0000 with Clone CD in 17 min. I use Clony XL for setting's. :4 PLEX IS THE BEST

I'm using mine for a week now and loving it. My previous burner was a Sony CRX-140s and was OK - but the Plextor is in a different league alltogether! :g
Plextor rulez!!
After i read this review I am a Believer again. Great test. Great drive.
I could not copy fifa 2002 with 241040a.....only works if daemon or hide cdr is enabled..ideas?
The LiteON drive is CHEAPER and JUST AS GOOD! Convert, you fools!
Have both the Plextor and the Lite-On 24x !! My favorite by far is the Lite-On(Damn Best Writer I ever used)Lite-On should have gooten the higher score over Plextor; but I guess some people's old habits dye hard !!! Enjoy !
If you want your reviews to be taken seriously you guys really need someone who understands the english language and can spell to edit these reviews.
GREAT review.. I am looking now for a new burner, and I was thinking of maybe buying the cheaper LG or Lite-On ones... but afetr your review.. .well .. let's just say I can't find any excuse not to buy a nice Plextor... Thanks Again!!
The Boss of all DVD Backup Software. There is no need to look further...!
DVD2one is alright, but it needs a new facelift, please looka at dvdshrink for fresh ideas. The software is fast and has many need features and it's free. Don't get me wrong, I care about functionality and quality. Could it be possible for DVD2ONE to implement some of the same features fo DVD Shrink?
Put simply the fastest DVD conversion software you can buy. Seriously. The average Dual Layer movie can be converted in 15-20 MAX. This is on a middle of the road XP1900 cpu. The quality is also just great and is better than DVD Shrink. Being that Shrink is free it not fair to knock it, but if you want to save some time and want better quality use this. The one downside is unlike Shrink it doesn't integrate into nero so you have to burn manually. But when you consider the speed and quality its not that big a deal.
