Conclusion

While using TMPGEnc DVD Author 3, a number of things both positive and negative were noted. The main points are listed below

Positive:

  • Very good feature set
  • Very good DivX authoring with a menu structure
  • Excellent/very good transcoding performance and quality
  • Very good format support
  • Easy to use
  • Good help file

 Negative:

  • Requires an Internet connection for key validation
  • The burning tool had burning speed issues

Conclusion

How did TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 perform in our tests? Let’s summarise the positive and negative aspects of the application below.

TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 is an extremely powerful application and covers nearly every common video and audio input file format currently used. What’s more is the quality of the output is excellent in most cases and at the very least very good on the highly compressed formats which are currently popular, such as MPEG1, and DivX.

The inclusion of DivX authoring with a full menu structure is a very worthwhile addition to the application. It is now possible to have a DivX file with chapters and a full menu system to allow easy navigation, just like we have all become accustomed to on a DVD.

TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 is also very easy to use. There are enough wizards to allow the novice user to create great looking DVD movie discs, as well as enough advanced features to allow the more experienced user the flexibility they demand from an authoring application.

The feature set is also very good with TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 and covers some very advanced authoring options. The built in editor should provide enough flexibility to meet most demands and again is very easy to operate.

There are not many negative things to say about TMPGEnc DVD Author 3. The only real negative thing we could find was the burning speed issue when we tried to burn our DVD at maximum speed.

Also, the need to have an Internet connection to validate the registration key could be a problem. This validation is required periodically, so an Internet connection is more or less a must to use this application.

To sum up, this is what we would say. “TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 is powerful with great quality output and has a great feature set”.

TMPGEnc DVD Author 3 can be purchased from the Pegasys website for $89.95 (April 2007).

How is the menu creation? is it as generic and plain as the earlier versions or can you create a professional looking menu without the little window boxes for each track? can you place "play" buttons where you want them on the screen? can you rename the "play" buttons?

I have this program, and like it alot. BUT One thing I hate is that when im burning several TV episodes to DVD, the names change from House S3E19 Act your Age to TRACK 2 or Title 2 And I have to manualy go rename them. Can I make this keep the origianl file names?

As most users will very likely use the programme for authoring dvb video streams, it is important to keep the following in mind: All files must be dvd compliant, esp. GOP sizes of > 15 for PAL andof > 18 for NTSC must be avoided. Otherwize, the built-in encoder really does a poor job: blocking where it has to intervene. You may want to use the XDVD feature, of course, but there might be problems playing the discs in your stand-alone devices. So, make sure your streams are compliant. If you are not sure, use Cuttermaran (option: dvd compliance) along with HC Encoder or QuEnc (necessary for the option to be enabled).

Hi guys, This software infact is a powerful tool for all newbies like me in terms of video editing. I find the software really helpful. But one thing is bothering me though -- the chapters i made in a single divx avi file during playback in a dvd player usually pauses for maybe hmmm a millisecond. It's noticeable though if your setting the movie to a 6min. interval chapters. Do you guys have any idea how to eliminate such?? Thanks and more power!

This program has the best video quality output you can get, BUT it does not encode 5.1 audio and does not understand dual audio avi files.

Why it needed 1 hour to output a MPEG2 file into a MPEG2 VOB series? The old version needed just 15-20 minutes. It might be that your MPEG2 file was a sort of DVB with long GOPs and less resolution (544 or 480 x 576 or x480) than the DVD specs (704 or 720). Since all of my DVD players accept DVB streams in VOB files, I simply patch the first header then I author the DVBs as normal. Whatz I like is the possibility now to have 2 audio streams and 2 subtitle streams - just perfect for ARTE.

I can't make a dvd using TMPGEnc DVD Author 3. I have to save the image and use other software. I get the following popup. "There is no usable writing drive installed" I have a Sony dvd rw DRU-800 installed and works fine with other software. Has anyone had this problem and solved it? Thanks in advance, GR

Very good DVD-Author! Quality and everything! Just liked to know, when they starting support non-dvd sizes? like from DVB-T captured files.. 544*576 and 480*576... And when HD support will be available, i think that's pretty much i ever needed! :X

this software is very strong but have many problems that should fix it in next versions: 1-dosent support sub/idx format subtitles. 2-dosent support arabic encoding subtitles. 3-very slowly convert xvid to dvd . but this program have a powerful feature : menu creation is simple and professional ,simulation its fantastic !
