Introduction

Welcome to Myce’s review of the Toshiba PX04SLB400 Enterprise
SSD.

Following our recent review of the magnificent PX04SMB160 we
look at the PX04SLB400, which Toshiba has designed to focus specifically on
meeting the requirements of the all important ‘read intensive’ market segment.

The PX04SL series is available in capacities of 2TB and 4TB. 
The 4TB drive is the subject of this review.

The PX04SLB400 combines a huge capacity with the performance
advantages of SAS 3.  How will it compare to its SATA based ‘read intensive’ competitors?

Market Positioning

This is how Toshiba positions the PX04SLB400 –

 

 

The Toshiba PX04SLB400 targets read intensive applications
and warrants endurance at 0.5 Drive Writes per Day (DWPD) over 5 years.

In the same way as for the PX04SMB1600, the PX04SLB400
enables users to set its power consumption profile to one of two modes – power
efficiency or maximum performance. For the PX04SMB160 we tested the drive in
both power modes.  However, we have decided that for the PX04SLB400 we will
test only in the power efficiency mode.  In our testing of the PX04SMB160 we
learned that the maximum performance mode mainly boosts write speeds and we did
not feel that this was of great benefit to a ‘read intensive’ solution.

We do however test the PX04SLB400 in dual port operation
(which, with the PX04SMB160, we found boosts read speeds significantly).

Our Myce/OakGate set of tests has been performed in single
and dual port operation, and our SNIA set of tests has been performed in single
port mode only.
