RealD now providing child size 3D glasses

RealD announced that it has created custom kids 3D glasses that are rolling out in time for the launch of Disney Pixar's Toy Story 3 movie this Friday.

The new glasses aimed at kids are the same model used for adults, but they are slightly smaller and should be a bit more comfortable to wear.  These smaller glasses are for children 8 years or younger, according to a press release, and will be wrapped and distributed using individual wrappers.

"The little ones will be able to comfortably enjoy the great summer movies coming out in RealD 3D wearing glasses designed just for them," said Joseph Peixoto, RealD Worldwide Cinema President, in a statement.  "Kid-sized RealD 3D glasses are made to the same high-quality standards as adult size RealD glasses with each individually packaged in sealed bags ensuring they are clean and fresh for every moviegoer.”

If you've seen a movie in 3D lately, it's likely you wore a pair of RealD 3D glasses.  The current glasses offered by the company are free, cheap and ugly -- and some people who've worn the glasses say they're uncomfortable.

RealD has already praised the development of designer 3D glasses, with Gucci and other companies expected to market more expensive 3D glasses for home use.  In addition to designer glasses, prescription 3D glasses are reportedly in development for release as 3D movie viewing becomes more popular across the United States.

A warning report released by Samsung in April said 3DTV may not be the best for children, with medical symptoms ranging from altered vision and dizziness to nausea and convulsions.

Dolby and other companies haven't announced similar kid-friendly models of 3D glasses, but I'd be surprised if they didn't follow suit.
