Study: young consumers more open to non-traditional movie viewing

Epix, which boasts Viacom, Paramount Pictures, MGM and Lionsgate as joint owners and is as entrenched with the movie business as humanly possible, released findings of a study on Tuesday that support a common assumption: the younger generation is more comfortable and likely to support new technology, while the older crowd is more satisfied with the standard, time-tested options.

Study: young consumers more open to non-traditional movie viewing

Applying that generally accepted concept to the shifting ways which we consume movies, the company divulged some interesting statistics from the April survey of 500 people who “streamed or downloaded video content during the previous six months”:

  • More than half (51%) of online streamers/downloaders also watch movies monthly on premium channels.
  • TV sets connected to the Internet are growing in importance for online movie viewing, particularly among younger adults – 26% of all streamers/downloaders and one in three in the 25-34 year-old age group say they stream movies on broadband-enabled TVs.
  • 44% of online video viewers utilize Internet Blu-ray players connected to TVs to watch movies.

The study suggests that 25-to-34-year olds are “significantly more likely” to use multi-faceted devices such as iPads and Netbooks to view movies than those 35-years old and up. Epix also found that PCs are “nearly as popular as televisions” for watching movies; seven out of eight respondents said they often zone out in front of a computer screen.

Mark Greenberg, Epix President and CEO, hinted that the research may impact how his bosses handle distribution moving forward.

“The results of this study illustrate the fact that consumers are increasingly accessing entertainment content wherever and whenever it is available and underscore the growing opportunities in cable to adapt to these changing viewing habits by providing movies and other content on every platform,” said Greenberg. “As movie consumption on new devices continues to grow in popularity, we remain focused on providing our authenticated subscribers access to the best content and extra features in all the ways they want it.” (Via Home Media Magazine)
