Amazon says France probing its DVD sales practices *updated*

Forbes.com is reporting that the French authorities are investigating Amazon and it's practices of selling DVDs in France. Strangely enough there is no explanation why the French authorities are probing the sales practices and sales on the Amazon website continue.

In April 2004, we learned that the French authorities are investigating our DVD sales practices in France, and we are cooperating fully," the company said.

The investigation was disclosed in the company's quarterly financial statement, which was filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission one day after it posted a quarterly profit but said it saw revenue forecasts lower than Wall Street's estimates.

Reasons for investigation could be unfair competition or sales of unauthorized DVDs. Both are very unlikely and we can only wonder what the reason is for this probe. Anyone experience with the French Amazon who has a clue?

Update:

Thanks to
the French webmaster Sébastien we can provide you with the following additional
information: "In fact, the authorities are investigating its DVD sales
pratices in order to know if amazon is in conformity with the french
legislation. In another word : the authorities want to know where the DVDs sold
on amazon.fr are coming from, and if the DVDs were really dedicated to the
french market"
