Blockbuster teams up with TiVo

Blockbuster and TiVo will team up so that Blockbuster content can be rented and sold through the digital TiVo recorders before the end of 2009.

"We are excited to be teaming with TiVo, the company that created the DVR, to make Blockbuster's entertainment content readily available to their millions of subscribers," Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes said in a statement.  "Ultimately, our vision is to work with TiVo so that their subscribers can access movies not only through our On Demand service but also from our stores and through our by-mail service as well."

Blockbuster, under heavy pressure from Netflix, has been forced to take its business online and into the living room.  Netflix already has a free instant streaming service through TiVo, but Blockbuster's service -- which is fee-based -- offers more new release content compared to Netflix.

Blockbuster will charge $3.99 for newer movies that can be watched over a 24-hour period, similar to other on-demand services.  It is likely that approximately 5,000 to 10,000 movies will be offered at any given time, the company said in a statement.

TiVo has also branched out and signed agreements with other content providers, as the company deals with more built-in DVR services through Comcast and other providers.
