To start the week off, CD Freaks is pleased to present a review of the Philips DVDR1660, which Philips was kind enough to send us. Like the last Philips DVD writer we reviewed - the DVDR1648, this drive features 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+R DL and 4x DVD-R DL writing speeds. The retail drive's software includes the Nero 6 OEM suite along with a rebate code for Nero 7 Premium.
While DVD writers store list of media for optimised writing performance when writing to known media, this Philips drive features SolidBurn, which is a self-learning feature to ensure the optimal writing strategy with any DVD+/-R media. For new / unknown media, the drive carries out its own tests by writing a very short test track in the LeadIn and LeadOut areas of the disc. The drive then measures the jitter of each test track and if this value is unacceptable, it will redo the test again until the jitter reaches an acceptable value before it begins writing the data. SolidBurn also ensures that the drive writes at the maximum possible write speed with optimal write quality. When most other DVD writers encounter a disc that is not in the drive's list, they generally use one default writing strategy and speed, regardless of the quality of the disc, which means that the disc may not be written as well as it could be.
