CD Freaks takes a first look at dual-layer writing

Tor Magne, moderator and drive reviewer, has given us a nifty sneak peek at dual-layer burning. We are very fortunate to have the cooperation of BenQ as they have allowed us access to a pre-production BenQ DW830A. Please understand as Tor points out, that this is not the companies finished product. However, everyone is eager to learn more about this exciting new format, so he has gleened some great information from this drive that we can all enjoy reading.

It has been a while since last time we looked into a BenQ drive, so it will be interesting to see where they are now and how their products are. The drive they sent us is their latest DVD-Writer; the BenQ DW830A. The drive we got here is a pre-release drive with unfinished firmware so we find it a bit useless to do a full review before the final firmware arrives. What we will take a look at is the features and the dual layer writing capabilities as they are now. Just to give you a taste on what to expect from the first generation dual layer capable drives. We will try to look at compatibility, quality and speed.

Once you have read the article, then be sure to visit the CD Freaks Recording Hardware Forum where a thread has already been started.  Tor, or OC-Freak as he is better known there, mentions that he is currently working on some other dual-layer projects. One thing that could prove very useful, is he is asking for some input from readers, as to what they would like to see covered in the upcoming reports on these drives. So go ahead and tell him, great idea Tor! Oh, and an excellent job as usual.
