Citizen develops world's first dual-layer error correction unit

A few days ago zmcnulty reported us that the
Japanese Citizen Watch Corporation announced the development of the world's first "DVD Dual
Layer Recording Use Active Aberration Correction Element." According to the
translated text, this is an advancement to the single layer DVD
recording "DVD Tilt Correction Element" which was already developed by
Citizen:

The independently developed correction element uses an ultra
small optical liquid crystal panel combined with a liquid crystal driving
IC, that can act as error correction for errors on the spherical
surface that occur as a result of the change between single and
dual layer recording. Since it uses current pickup assemblies, it
"drastically reduces aberrations, and provides stable recording in a
variety of disc fluctuations. We were able to keep the high compatibility
with different players, too."

The company currently produces 1,000,000 "DVD Tilt Correction Elements" per month. The technology will be introduced with the spread of dual layer DVD recording, and production should be about 5,000,000 per month beforetheendoftheyear.
