DVD Plus Identifier recognizes DVD+R(W) media manufacturers (ADIP)

xkrissx used our news submit to tell us that a new utility for identifying DVD recordable discs. The software only works for DVD+R and DVD+RW discs. Recordable CDs and DVDs all contain a code that lists parameters that can be used by CD/DVD recorders. Those parameters also include the manufacturer of the CD/DVD recordable, with CDs this is called ATIP, with DVDs this is called ADIP. This information is usefull when doing quality comparisations between manufacturers.

"DVD Plus Identifier" retrieves disc manufacturer information from the ADIP area of DVD+R and DVD+RW discs making it possible to correctly identify discs. To retrieve ADIP information DVD Plus Media Identifier uses a command which was only recently introduced in the Multimedia command specification (MMC-4 revision 2a, dated June 9th 2003, to be exact). As a consequence the number of drives that will support this command is currently relatively limited.

Nevertheless, all future drives will support this command and older drives will likely include support for this command through firmware upgrades. For example, the Ricoh MP-5125A (a very popular drive which is also shipped by companies such as Hewlett-Packard and Philips) does not support this command with firmware 1.51 but when the firmware is upgraded to 1.64, ADIP retrieval is supported.

The software has been developed by Kris
Schoofs, known by older CD Freaks visitors because of his duplicator software,
that was one of the first applications that introduced writing possibilities for
copy protections. More information and downloads can be found here. Discuss this software in our Media Forum.
