DVD+RW DL specifications released for distribution

Philips
Licensing recently released the DVD+RW DL basic format specifications version
1.0 for distribution according to its news page.
Some information about the DVD+RW DL format has been available in the MMC-5 draft
for a while too but else we haven't heard much about the format.

The
DVD+RW DL format will however not be the only rewritable dual layer DVD format
because JVC has previously announced that it has developed a competing DVD-RW DL
format. JVC said in the
beginning of the year
that it will start making DVD-RW DL media
in the second quarter this year and last month the DVD-RW DL logo was approved by DVD forum.

The
demand for rewritable dual layer DVD media will likely be quite small
though as the demand for rewritable media in general is much lower than for
write-once media and DVD±RW DL media will probably face much worse compatibility
problems than both DVD±RW SL media and DVD±R DL
media.
