Edonkey goes server less: Overnet public beta released...

Observer used our newssubmit to tell us about Overnet. The Creators of the File sharing engine known as Edonkey 2000 has a new project called Overnet Edonkey 2000 without servers. More like a Gnutella network.

Q: How is Overnet different from gnutella?

Gnutella and Overnet are both distributed networks. But Overnet uses what is called a distributed hashtable to organize the data that is searched for. This means that nodes know what other nodes to send a search to. In Gnutella the searches and publishes are sent more or less randomly so the the network is far less efficient. It is like the difference between looking something up in a large pile of papers or in a filing cabinet.

Their site design isn't finished yet and their is only a windows version for now. Overnet is still in the early beta stages but they think it is working better than the donkey at this point.

You can download Overnet version 0.27 at their homepage.
