Iomega announces 12X dual format and USB dual layer writer

Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM), a global leader in data storage and one of India's leading data storage vendors, today announced the general availability of the new Iomega® Super DVD Writer 12x Dual-Format EIDE/ATAPI Drive and the Iomega Super DVD Writer 12x Dual-Format USB 2.0 Drive, the latter being a double layer DVD drive, in India through its channel partners '“ Ingram Micro, Neoteric and TechPacific. The Iomega Super DVD Writer 12x Dual-Format USB 2.0 Drive is the first in a new generation of external Iomega DVD recorders that can store up to 8.5GB* on a single DVD+R DL (double layer) disc. The ATAPI Drive is incidentally the lowest priced dual format DVD writer in the Indian market today at Rs. 7265/- exclusive of taxes.

"Iomega's storage solutions are well-known for their ease-of-use and the bundled software, and these two latest Super DVD Writers are no different," said Chris McPherson, Managing Director, Asia Pacific, Iomega Pacific. "Together with an outstanding collection of software, the new drives give users a convenient tool for managing their videos, data, music and photos."

New 8.5GB Capacity with the USB 2.0 Drive

DVD+R DL discs have two recording layers rather than one, providing users with 8.5GB total capacity, or 80 percent more than the previous generation of 4.7GB DVD discs. This new capacity confers a number of important benefits:

Users can store DVD-quality home video at higher bit rates, improving picture resolution and quality.
Businesses can archive up to 12 CDs worth of data on a single DVD+R DL disc, reducing cost and complexity.
IT departments can build system images for their client PCs.
Filmmakers can master and test new DVD titles using inexpensive discs before pressing a batch of discs with traditional equipment.
Key Features

Both Iomega's Super DVD Writer 12x Dual-Format Drives are quick and easy to set up, operate and share among multiple computers and operating systems, making it an excellent choice for virtually any writable disc format, including CDs, single-layer DVDs, and double-layer DVDs for the USB 2.0 drive.

Supported formats for the USB 2.0 drive include DVD+R and DVD+RW (12x4x12x write, rewrite, and DVD-ROM speeds), DVD-R and DVD-RW (8x4x12x), and CD-R and CD-RW discs (40x24x40x), and formats supported by the EIDE/ATAPI drive include DVD+R and DVD+RW (12x4x12x write, rewrite, and DVD-ROM speeds), DVD-R and DVD-RW (8x4x12x), and CD-R and CD-RW discs (48x24x48x). Ripping music CDs is also faster than ever, thanks to 40x digital audio extraction.

The new drives also feature buffer underrun protection for reliable burns and come with the Iomega DVD Solutions Wizard, which takes the guesswork out of recording tasks by helping users select the appropriate software and type of disc for different tasks.

The DVD+R DL Standard

DVD+R DL recording technology is a "write-once" recording technology that was developed by Philips and media manufacturer MKM. It has been adopted by the DVD+RW Alliance, whose members include Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Mitsubishi Chemical/Verbatim, Philips, Ricoh, Sony, Thomson, Yamaha and Microsoft.

The double-layer disc format consists of two recording layers of organic dye film. The top layer is semi-transparent, allowing the recording laser to focus on either the top layer or the bottom layer. When recording data, the laser heats microscopic regions on one of the recording layers, creating permanent dots in the organic dye film. The resulting data can be read in virtually any standard DVD player or DVD-ROM drive.

Software

Bundled software includes Iomega's DVD Solutions Wizard, Iomega Automatic Backup, Iomega HotBurn® Pro, Sonic™ MyDVD® video-editing software, Sonic Cineplayer™ software for the highest quality video playback, MusicMatch® Jukebox music management software and Adobe® Photoshop Album™ Starter Edition. For Mac® OS users, CharisMac® Discribe™ and MusicMatch software are included.

Iomega's DVD Solutions Wizard launches directly from the desktop and takes the guesswork out of writing DVDs by helping users select the appropriate software and type of disc for different tasks.

Iomega Automatic Backup software provides continuous real-time backup to any drive letter, the ability to save multiple revisions and keep multiple backup sets on different destination drives, the ability to exclude files by file type, to schedule backups, and to cache backups temporarily.

Iomega's HotBurn Pro software complements Windows® XP by adding true drag-and-drop file recording, an integrated console interface, integrated DVD and CD copying and imaging, compilation creation, and a jewel case editor. Added features include a graphical audio layout editor; pop, click and hiss removal filters; and bootable CD creation.

Iomega also just announced the new Iomega Super DVD QuikTouch™ Video Burner 12x Dual Format USB 2.0 Drive that enables one-touch video transfer to the most popular DVD or CD formats, including Double-Layer (DL) DVDs.

As the first QuikTouch drive to offer Double-Layer DVD recording capability, the new QuikTouch Dual-Format drive gives users 80 percent more capacity per disc: up to 8.5 GB*, compared to 4.7 GB for single-layer DVDs. That capacity advantage makes the new QuikTouch drive the most advanced and flexible option yet for preserving video memories. Users can now record up to four hours of DVD-quality video, save over 3,000 songs, or archive up to 8.5 GB of computer data and photos on each DVD+R DL (Double-Layer) disc.
