According to DigiTimes, Lite-On
IT is seeing a growth in its DVD recorder shipments. The company is
currently the largest optical drive manufacturer in Taiwan and, if it were up to
Lite-On, next quarter it may become the largest maker of DVD burners worldwide.
In August Lite-On shipped around 700,000 to
800,000 units compared to 500,000 to 600,000 units it ships during an average
month. Next quarter though the company aims to increase these figures to 900,000
units or even 1 million units per month:
The growth in shipments is partly due to an adequate supply of
DVD burner chipsets from MediaTek, Lite-On IT indicated. Other DVD burner
makers in Taiwan, including BenQ, Behavior Tech Computer (BTC), Quanta
Storage and Accesstek, are considering adoption of Mediatek's chipsets
because the company offers lower prices than imported products and can act
as a second source to secure stable supply. Mediatek recently began volume
shipments of chipsets for use in 16x DVD burners, Lite-On IT
said.
