Lite-On to produce Blu-ray drives using Philips tech

About
a month ago Lite-On
announced
that it would take over BenQ's ODD business. Today Digitimes reports that as a result of this deal Lite-On will
start volume production in July of Blu-ray Disc (BD) drives based on technology
from Philips:

The H/H BD drive models
had been originally developed by BenQ's ODD unit and Lite-On IT has taken
over the development, including the use of technology from Philips that
was licensed to BenQ, the sources pointed out. Lite-On IT is expected to
take control of BenQ's ODD business in June of this year.

Orders
for H/H BD drives were received by Philips BenQ Digital Storage (PBDS), a
joint venture between BenQ and Philips, and the production for all OEM/ODM
orders received by the company will be taken over by Lite-On IT, the
sources indicated.

The
BD prototype drives Philips (SPD7000) and BenQ (BW1000) showed at CES and CeBIT
were triple BD/CD/DVD writers with support for 2x BD-R/RE, 32x CD-R, 24x CD-RW,
12x DVD±R, 4x DVD±R DL and 4x DVD±RW. It remains to be seen whether the final
Lite-On produced drive will maintain these
specs.
