More confusion about regional encoding of High Definition discs

According to a news published at HDTV, the regional encoding on High Definition discs is generating a chaos. The current regional system for Blu-ray discs should be the following:

  • Region 1: the US and Japan
  • Region 2: Europe and Africa
  • Region 3: China Russia and other countries.

At Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, however, it seems that regional encoding is optional.

The HD-DVD discs seems rather chaotic too. Current HD DVD players do not use region encoding, but rumblings from the DVD forum (responsible for setting DVD standards) have suggested that region encoding will be introduced for HD DVD sometime during 2007.

Are you confused? Good, very good! Because confusing end-consumers is the best policy to increase selling in the market...
