More movie releases in UMD for the PSP coming soon

Apparently the PlayStation Portable is proving itself in the motion picture world. Enough of the first rounds of films have already been sold to warrant the release of some more on the proprietary and unintuitively named - Universal Media Disc or UMD.

According to an article written at Video Business Online, 20th Century Fox is cutting a deal with Sony to release Dodgeball, Predator, I, Robot, Super Troopers and Napoleon Dynamite on the tiny disks. They go on to say that by the end of summer, those with a PSP might be able to purchase films from Universal and Paramount.

Sony has just unveiled their next UMD releases for June 14th and June 28th. On June 14th, PSP owners can pick up The Grudge, Bad Boys, Spider-Man: The Animated Series - Mutant Menace and Dady Day Care. Two weeks later on the 28th, consumers can take home Crouching tiger Hidden Dragon, Resident Evil, Starship Troopers and Air Force One.

On June 21st, Disney/Buena Vista/Dimension will be releasing to the UMD format King Artur The extended Unrated Directors cut, Hostage, Cursed, and Tron.

Tron? What do you think, is this some kind of a hype or a fad? We have to wonder if the world is ready for UMD, especially if you can only use them on Sony devices. Sony President Ben Feingold told Video Business Online that he predicts most, if not all studios will be releasing in this format and he knows for it to catch on, he has to have a broad variety of content to offer the customer.
