Napster DRM cracked using PyMusique source code: Musik

Some weeks ago, we reported that PyMusique was finally released to the public. This tool allowed Linux (but later on, there was a windows port) users to use the iTunes store. What the developing team didn't expect is that the DRM protection was applied on client side, on your own computer. Obviously, Apple patched its iTunes Store and the 'hole' was closed. DVD Jon [Jon Johansen] said PyMusique's objective isn't removing DRM protection, but mostly to allow Linux users to purchase music in the iTunes Store, since Apple doesn't provide a Linux-compatible iTunes.

In a parallel zone, Cody Brocious and his team used PyMusique source code in order to develop a similar application, for Napster - Musik. This software allows users to purchase from Napster store, while removing the DRM protection. But unlike Apple, the DRM protection is applied at 'server-side', which makes it harder to break it. However, Cody said this was possible, and his team is working on it, based on Beale Screamer's code.

According to Cody, his achievement could allow breaking DRM keys of other stores, using WMA (Windows Media Audio) format, like MSN Music, with just a little bit of work. Of course that you still have to pay for song you want, but at least you're not restricted to the company's rules.

Cody would like to note that is intent is to call company's attention to release Linux versions of their applications. Expect an updated release soon, at his blog.
