DVD burners have dropped some 30 dollars in one quarter this year to US-70
in late August. According to Taiwan
optical disc drive makers, competition among manufacturers in Taiwan, South
Korea and Japan is the driving force.
 The top five competitors in terms of shipments of DVD burners are NEC, Hitachi-LG Data Storage (HLDS), Pioneer and two Taiwan makers, Lite-On IT and BenQ. Other Japanese brands, including Sony and Ricoh, have replaced self-production with OEM production, the Taiwan ODD makers indicated.Apart from price competition, the decrease in OEM price of 16x DVD burners is also due to competitors hoping to increase their total shipments next quarter, the traditional peak season, the makers noted. Global demand for DVD burners will reach 55-60 million units next year, the makers predicted. This year, Japan-based market research firm Techno Systems Research (TSR) estimates global demand to be 45 million DVD burners. Lite-On IT and BenQ each hope to have monthly shipments of one million DVD burners next quarter. |
This is good news for us, of course just in time too for
the holiday rush of buying. One has to wonder just how low these prices can go.
