Oak Technology new chipset: supports all DVD formats

Oak technology has released information about a new product that makes an end on the DVD format troubles. Their chip solution that will likely be implented by optical storage manufacturers supports a wide array of DVD formats and is also able to write CD-Rs.

The chip is responsable for the following formats and maximum speeds: 4X DVD-R/+R/-RW/+RW (4.7GB) write speed, 32X CD-R write, 48X CD-ROM read, and 16X DVD read speeds andsupport for CAV, Z-CLV, and CLV modes. Supports DVD-ROM/-R/+R/-RW/+RW discs

This solution supports all popular media types by reading DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD-RW discs, eliminating consumer concerns about media compatibility. By combining a high level of integration and performance, the chip set offers consumer and PC drive OEMs lower cost and faster recording times.

The CD-R/RW and recordable DVD solution employs advanced features such as an automated dynamic write strategy to reduce the size and complexity of required firmware, OPC/ROPC processor blocks to achieve high accuracy writing, and power management to reduce power consumption and increase efficiency for slim drive applications.

More information can be found on the press release on Yahoo. Mind that this is only a chipset that has to be implented in new drives, Mitsumi is one of the companies that will most likely produce Oak Technology chip based drives.
