Prices for CD-R media to increase by 10% in 3Q of this year

Prices for CD and DVD
media are always fluctuating and we often report about decreasing or increasing
prices. Today we can read another report on this over at
DigiTimes. It is expected that prices for CD-R media will jump by 10 percent in
the third quarter of this year:

Thanks
to strong demand, prices for CD-R discs will jump by 10% from about US $
0.20 per disc currently to US $ 0.22 in the third quarter, according to
Ritek and CMC Magnetics, the two largest optical storage disc makers in
Taiwan.

Global demand for CD-R discs is estimated to
be about nine billion units in 2003, while worldwide capacity is expected
to reach only seven billion, said CMC chairman Bob Wong, predicting that
the estimated two-billion-unit short supply will support price growth
through the end of this year. Worldwide CD-R disc capacity will continue
to fall short of demand for the next two years, he said.

Ritek, projecting a rather conservative view,
said demand for CD-R discs is expected to grow at a slower pace in the
fourth quarter and prices will continue to go up at year-end only if
unexpectedly strong demand
emerges.
