Report: Apple netbook possible, not likely

Although it sat on the sidelines and patiently waited to see how the netbook market would develop, numerous sources indicate Apple is reportedly working on its first netbook.

Two unnamed sources in Asia recently told the Dow Jones Newswires that the new netbook could launch as soon as the second half of 2009, though specific details about the netbook remain unknown.

At least one unnamed source said Apple's netbook debut will feature a touchscreen screen likely 10" in size, which would put Apple on par with netbook makers who have 9" screens.

The Taiwanese company responsible for creating the touch screen used on the iPhone, Wintek, is said to be the company developing the 10-inch touch screen. Delivery to Apple is expected to begin in the third quarter.

The popularity of netbooks continues to explode and analysts have previously stated that the sky is the limit right now.  Dell, Acer, Asus and Hewlett-Packard have all released netbooks, with each company planning for future netbook releases.  Apple normally specializes in expensive, flashy laptops, but releasing lower-cost netbooks could help convince Microsoft Windows and Linux OS users to give Mac OS X a try on netbooks.
