Samsung SW-240B CD-RW review @ MBreview.com

Samsung drive reviews are currently popping up all over the web and also the website MBreview.com has taken a look at Samsungs 40x model the SW-240B. Besides writing at 40x (Z-CLV), this drive rewrites at 10x and reads data back at 40x.

It has a 8 MB buffer and features JustLink and JustSpeed to prevent buffer underruns and to determine the right settings for the used media. Because of the low price and it's average performance the reviewer was pretty happy with it:

Conclusion:Well, what do I think of the Samsung SW-240B? The SW-240B is a quick, affordable, and quiet drive. The one area I didn't really cover in the review was the technologies used to make this drive quiet. There's not too much I can really say about them besides, they work. The drive, just as with the SW-232B, is one of the quietest CD-RW drives I have ever had the pleasure of working with, however at times it can give off a bit of a high pitched tone. The sound difference compared to the Plextor drive is very noticeable. Plextor drives are known for performance, which we have seen proven today, but their price and loudness deter some users. The SW-240B laid a good beating on the competition with all of the seek time tests; however the read performance was a bit more disappointing, with the 240B falling behind the 232B sometimes.

Although it is only by a small margin, it is still a bit disappointing, and hopefully Samsung will be able to improve performance with subsequent firmware releases. If you're currently looking into purchasing a new burner, I would recommend this drive for its price / performance ratio, and noise level. It might not be the absolute fastest out there, or be the best, but when you can purchase one of these drives at several online retailers for between $60-70, you can't complain.
