According to Sony representatives in Tokyo, the internal PlayStation2 hardware is being slightly remodeled to defeat PS2 modchips which allow users to play copies of pirated software. In sections of Taiwan and Hong Kong, pirated copies of PlayStation2 software and modchips are now openly available. What's worse, the PlayStation2 piracy isn't limited to CD-ROM titles. Some pirates have copied DVD-ROM games, and by stripping music tracks, fit them on standard 74min CDR media.

The standard PlayStation2 unit is model number; SCPH 10000. However, a new version of the PlayStation2 system is scheduled to begin shipping next month in Japan, model number; SCPH 15000. The internal differences between the systems remain unknown.
