Vudu gets Disney download-to-own HD movies

Video-on-demand provider Vudu is the first to offer download-to-own HD movies from Disney, with new releases to be made available the day they're released on DVD and Blu-ray.

Vudu will offer 69 Buena Vista Home Entertainment titles available at launch on June 4, including the Pirates of the Caribbean and National Treasure films. Noticeably absent are Disney animated classics such as Pinocchio, although more titles are set to arrive over the coming weeks.

Vudu's movie download-to-own titles begin at $4.99, ranging up to around $20 for a new release. The company currently offers more than 15,000 movies and TV episodes, including more than 2,000 HD movies. HD titles purchased through the system are stored on customers' Vudu set top boxes in Vudu’s MPEG-4 H.264, 24 fps 1080p HDX format.
