WD starts shipping $220 500GB notebook HD

Western Digital has announced that it starts shipping its WD Scorpio Blue 2.5-inch notebook hard drives with capacities up to 500GB. WD uses 250GB-per-platter technology and their new HDs are designed for notebook computers and portable storage devices.

In its press release Western Digital promises that its Scorpio Blue HDs deliver high-performance with a 3 Gb/s transfer range, while included features will keep the drives quiet during this process.

"WD continues to provide the mobile market with high-capacity storage everywhere consumers and business professionals travel," said Jim Morris, WD's vice president and general manager of notebook storage.

WD announced that it will introduce two versions, one with 400GB capacity and one with 500GB capacity both costing $190 and $220 respectively.

"Notebook system manufacturers continue to improve performance, while adding data-hungry features. The WD Scorpio Blue 400 GB and 500 GB hard drives provide the capacity needed to maximize the latest features and functions available in today's notebook computers, while relying on WD's exceptional reliability."
