Will we see soon a Lite-On 16x DVD+R DL burner?

According to a news published at DigiTimes, the DVD+RW Alliance announced that it had released the specifications for 12x and 16x DVD+R DL (single-sided double-layer) burning speeds, and Lite-On announced the possibility to produce 16x burning speed capable burners at the end of this year.

According to the news, a 16x DVD+R DL format can reduce the burning time to 8-10 minutes, and this is expected to significantly push up the demand for DVD+R DL discs.

The main concern, in my opinion, will be about prices of 16x DL certified media and also their availability. Don’t forget that 12x certified RAM discs, for example, are not available at all in Europe.
