Apple's iPhone 4S battery drain fix seeing mixed results

Disgruntled iPhone 4S owners struggling with an unusual iOS 5-related battery-sucking glitch were served an update on Thursday that promised to correct the problem. It did, and it didn't. One day later and post-patch, customers complained their new smartphones' batteries were still depleting way too quickly.

Tech news site AllThingsD pointed toward Apple's official support community, where frustrated customers questioned why the update didn't work for them.

One iPhone 4S owner divulged they had performed a "clean install" of the iOS 5.0.1 update, turned off several features, installed no apps and more to see if it would help. "I then charged the phone up to 100 percent, then placed it down on the table overnight, with the screen off, about three feet from my WiFi router," they explained. "After 15 hours with no use whatsoever, the battery is at 20 percent."

Another commenter speculated certain apps could be to blame. "My wife has the 4S and doesn't have battery problems, and she doesn't run twitter," he said.

Several others voiced their intention to return the phone altogether for a vanilla iPhone 4, or give the competition a shot.

"My iPhone 4s is worse after the upgrade," said one particularly incensed owner. "Losing 7 percent every 15 minutes. Even though I am not using my iPhone. Disgusting Apple. Sort it out. This is my first iPhone. I have only owned it for a week. Seriously considering going back to a Samsung and android!"

Apple has since commented on the persistent problem, telling the tech journal: "The recent iOS software update addressed many of the battery issues that some customers experienced on their iOS 5 devices. We continue to investigate a few remaining issues."

Apple admitted there was a problem last Wednesday. "A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices," a statement from the company read. "We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks."
