Apple's new iPad 3 & iPhone 5 could arrive in October

Apple's second generation iPad launched just three months ago, but a new report claims the company is gearing up to announce a third version of the hugely successful tablet that could hit the market as soon as October.

Consumer electronics business and technology research site DigiTimes reported on Friday that their inside sources divulged that a production ramp-up by several suppliers responsible for materials such as battery packs (Dynapack and Simplo Technologies), touch panels (TPK Holding, Wintek) and webcams (Largan Precision) speaks to an upcoming iPad 3 model. China-based Foxconn Electronics are expected to handle general assembly.

The move will jump-start production on the long-rumored iPhone 5, also slated for a fall release. A limited assembly run will begin by August, said the site's sources, with production to begin in earnest over the following two months.

Predictions about just what new features the iPad 3 would bring to the table have broached the subject of screen resolution. One rumor suggested the next version could feature a resolution up to six times greater than what is currently offered by the device's second generation model. Of course, this isn't the first time speculation over an increase in resolution turned up; eventually, those rumors were proven false.

The original iPad sold its first million units in one month. The iPad 2 did it over a weekend. Could the iPad 3 do it in a day? We could find out this fall.
