Early reports indicate Avatar has racked up more than 1.5 million Blu-ray sales on release, outpacing The Dark Knight.
While the effort has secured Avatar the one-day Blu-ray sales record, it's worth noting the DVD version is still outselling the Blu-ray version almost two to one. Combined DVD and Blu-ray sales of the James Cameron blockbuster have topped 4 million total units, according to The Hollywood Reporter, putting Avatar on track to be the year's top-selling release. Retailers have reportedly sold around 60% of their Blu-ray inventory, along with 50% of DVDs.
A special release edition of Avatar is expected to hit stores in November, which will include extensive bonus features, although the 3D Blu-ray version is not expected until next year.
