BDXL format promises 128GB Blu-ray discs

The Blu-ray Disc Association has announced two new disc specifications - one offering a hefty 128GB of storage and another offering hybrid ROM/RE discs.

The BDXL (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs) format will utilise three or four layers to offer 100GB and 128GB write-once discs along with 100GB rewriteable discs.

The Intra-Hybrid Blu-ray Disc (IH-BD) format will combine a 25 GB BD-ROM layer with a 25 GB BD-RE rewritable layer.

Specifications for both disc types will be published later this year, although it has been confirmed both formats will be incompatible with existing Blu-ray hardware. However future BDXL and IH-BD devices can be designed to support existing 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray discs, according to the Blu-ray Disc Association.
