BitDefender releases free anti-ransomware software

Antivirus vendor BitDefender has released a free tool that should protect users against variants of the CTB-Locker, Locky and TeslaCrypt ransomware. The Romanian company calls the tool a vaccine and the tool is the successor of a tool that previously only protected systems against the Cryptowall ransomware.

"The new tool is an outgrowth of the Cryptowall vaccine program, in a way", Chief Security Strategist Catalin Cosoi explained. He continues, "we had been looking at ways to prevent this ransomware from encrypting files even on computers that were not protected by Bitdefender antivirus and we realized we could extend the idea."

The 4.5MB download should protect at least against known versions of the supported ransomware families and likely also against future variants.
