Cheap Netflix subscription already available in Malaysia at $4 per month

Earlier this week we reported that Netflix was planning to offer a cheaper tier in developing countries. According to a Malaysian website, Netflix has started to offer this tier in that country. The new subscription type costs around $4 and only offers streaming on mobile devices.

Currently the subscription appears to be only available in Malaysia and not in e.g. the United States or Europe. The price of the mobile-only subscription is 17 ringgits ($4), a Basic subscription costs 33 ringgits (about $8), which means it's similarly priced as in other countries.

With the new tier, Netflix hopes to make it possible for a whole new type of users to purchase a subscription to the video streaming service. In many parts of the world, such as Asia and Africa users are unable to pay the regular Netflix prices. In many of those countries, the smartphone is often also the primary way of watching video or browsing the internet.

It's unknown whether Netflix will also offer the mobile-only tier in other countries.
