The company was founded by a Chinese entrepreneur who asked an American to join him. Together they started the company in 2011 to make cloud storage available to the large Chinese market. In China users can't easily upload their pictures and videos to sites like Dropbox and Facebook.

To send data to the Yunio servers their software needs to be installed. The software is available for Windows, Mac OS X, iOS and Android. The mobile versions allow automatic backups of photos and videos where you can opt to only upload files to the service when connected to Wifi. Also syncing of files is supported and a feature the company calls 'enhanced public links' allows online previews, password protected downloads, download limits on files and auto expiration of links.

Signing up to the service is easy, the service only requests your name, e-mail address and a password. Uploading from a 6 Mbit connection in the Netherlands to the Yunio servers didn't go faster than 560 KB/s which is still acceptable. The software is in English but some typos like 'Quit Yunio if click back',  'Loginging' and 'phototos' reveal the software is developed in a foreign country, in this case China.

A quick scan of the terms of the software (translated with Google Translate) doesn't show anything suspicious.
