Cisco recalls switches that could hurt you

Networking giant Cisco is replacing its IE5000 switches because an issue with the device has the potential to hurt its user. The company discovered that potential damage to the source wiring can cause a short to the metal enclosure/barrier.

According to Cisco that could "lead to a potential electrical and/or fire safety hazard for the end user" and therefore the company is replacing affected devices. The issue was found in a single device that wasn't shipped yet and Cisco underlines that none of its customers were affected.

However the issue could be so serious that owners of specific batches should sent their IE5000 switch to Cisco to get a new one. Owners of the specific switch can go to the Cisco site to find whether their device should be replaced.

The IE5000 isn't a switch you would use at home, it has four 10 Gigabit or four 1 Gigabit Ethernet uplinks and 24 Gigabit Ethernet downlinks and a MSRP of nearly $9000. It's also ruggedized to make it suitable for e.g utility industries, oil and gas field sites and mining.
