Cisco launching an Android tablet for businesses

Cisco announced it will offer a Google Android-powered tablet aimed at enterprise users looking for a light, ultraportable product to use while working. The new tablet is dubbed Cius.

The tech powerhouse is moving forward with the assumption that video chat could ultimately replace audio during teleconferences.  Cius has front-facing and rear-facing cameras, with users able to easily create, edit and share files and work projects.

Although the device isn’t as appealing to look at as the iPad, it is a corporate workhorse with necessary built-in features.

The 1.15-pound Cius tablet will include high-definition video, streaming and real-time video support, virtual support, and multi-party conferencing.  Cisco's Cius is a 7-inch tablet device that includes Cisco will also offer support for the Android marketplace, and its own software suite, including Cisco Show, Cisco Quad, WebEx, and IM.

Client trials of the Cisco Cius will begin sometime during Q3 2010, but won't be available to the mass market until Q1 2011.

The Apple iPad has been a popular consumer gadget, but still hasn't found a foothold in the enterprise market.  Other tablet makers are focusing on the consumer market before expanding too much into the enterprise, but many companies will remain on the lookout for viable products.

Some iPad owners are using their tablets while in the office, but the Cius and few select products offer communication and collaboration solutions.  Cisco is looking for ways to blend corporate features into consumer-based products -- depending on the price, I think the Cius could be an ideal product for those in the workplace.  Expect Cisco to approach current clients and partners about using the Cius, with a trickle effect as more corporate users begin to familiarize themselves with the device.
