Corrupt update for Bitdefender antivirus caused software to stop working

A corrupt update caused the antivirus software from Bitdefender for Windows to stop doings its job. Users of the Bitdefender's business solution, GravityZone, and users of the consumer versions were affected by the issue.

After users downloaded the latest update of the software, they received a warning that the Bitdefender antivirus application encountered a critical error after which the software stopped working.

On the Bitdefender forums many users complained about the issue. After a while, Bitdefender issued a statement stating the problem was caused by an engine update that wasn't completely delivered to some of the company's customers.

The update was online for 15 minutes after it was withdrawn and replaced with a working update. The antivirus company stresses the issue only affected only a limited number of users and no data was lost due to the corrupt update.

According to OPSWAT, Bitdefender has a market-share of 4.53%. AVAST holds the number one position with 19.11%, followed by ESET with 14.49% and MalwareBytes with 8.02%.
