Custom rugged PS3 enclosure designed for battlefield conditions

Popular modder Benjamin Heckendorn is back at it again with a new Sony PlayStation 3 game console installed in a custom case designed for tough environments. The new hardy PS3 mod was requested by people interested in a console that is able to withstand the harsh environment in Afghanistan.

The custom mod was requested by civilian unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) pilots working in Afghanistan looking for a durable PS3.

Heck used a PS3 Slim unit and power supply, Netgear Ethernet switch, built-in speakers, and power strip inside the iM2600 Pelican Storm Case. A 22-inch screen and TV tuner are also built into the case, which also has room for controllers and games.

"It was both fun and rewarding to work on the portable gaming mod featured in the latest episode," Heck said in a press release. "The Kokkebys, as well as our military servicemen and women, sacrifice so much for our country. The least I could do was build a portable video game console that allows them to enjoy gaming with their avid-gamer friends serving in the military, no matter where they are in the world."

The full video episode can be found on the element14 community website, which is worth watching at least once. Heck has also has turned the Microsoft Xbox 360 game console into a portable unit, as The Ben Heck Show remains a viable online resource for modding enthusiasts.

Unfortunately, it's unknown how durable the custom PS3 mod is, because Heck doesn't record any actual testing.  It's a neat design and Heck will continue to look for innovative ways to blend game consoles and PCs with secure and mobile solutions.
