DirecTV launches dedicated 3D channels

Panasonic and DirecTV have launched three new 3D channels that will show nothing but 3D content, as both companies announced the new "n3D" stations.

The n3D channels will be available to all DirecTV subscribers, and won't cost extra for regular DirecTV customers.  To help drive interest further, DirecTV and Panasonic will help show a variety of content ranging from sporting events and music to TV programming.

DirecTV will offer the Coke Zero 400 Nascar race this weekend in 3D, with Major League Baseball games -- including the 2010 All-Star Game -- also to be shown through the new 3D channels.

"It's not about the 3D of old with spears coming at you ... it's about an immersive experience," said Steven Roberts, DirecTV Senior VP, during a live demonstration.  "This is really just the beginning.... We truly believe that 3D is the next step in the television revolution."

DirecTV subscribers have already received the software update, with the n3D channels available to any DirecTV subscribers that have a 3D-capable HDTV and active-shutter 3D glasses.

ESPN continues to broadcast the FIFA World Cup in 3D, with the X-Games and other live sporting events expected to be shown in 3D this summer.  In addition, In-Stat believes 1 in 5 HDTVs sold in 2013 will include 3D capabilities, as consumer interest increases.

DirecTV first announced plans to launch a new 3D channel last December, with company officials promising last March to offer 3D by June.  Although just a month late, this is a strong sign that DirecTV will be able to compete with other services that begin to include 3D and streaming support.  The satellite company already receives new movie releases faster than Netflix, because DirecTV was able to reach special distribution agreements with Hollywood movie studios.
