DisplayLink allows 4K monitors to connect using USB and WiGig

The company DisplayLink today demonstrated USB adapters that can output 4K (UltraHD) content to monitors supporting that resolution. The company did a demo of this technology at the Intel Developer Forum, currently held in San Francisco.  Besides the demonstration of 4k over USB, the company also demonstrated 4K over WiGig (80.211ad).

The technology makes it possible to attach 4K monitors to computers that don't natively support this resolution. DisplayLink claims that their technology can be used to display 4K content on multiple monitors, depending on the graphical capabilities of the host machine. Displaying 4K content should work over USB 3.0 but also on the slower USB 2.0 interface, the latter could cause some frames to drop.

Wireless 4K is supported by WiGig, a standard developed by the WiFi-Alliance .

It supports wireless data transfers of up to 7 Gbit/s which equals nearly 900 MB/s. For that speed to be achieved the technology does not go through walls, and as the technology is compatible with WiFi it will switch to a slower transfer mode. So far the DisplayLink technology is only demonstrated, the company announced that availability of samples and production will be announced at a later date.
