Facebook Chief Security Officer to Adobe: Please kill Flash

The brand new Chief Security Officer (CSO) of Facebook has stated he would like Adobe to stop with Flash and would like all browser developers to stop supporting the popular technology. Alex Stamos, previously responsible for security at Yahoo, is hardly two weeks the new CSO of Facebook.

On Twitter he stated that Adobe should announce a date from which Flash is no longer supported. Browser developers like Mozilla, Microsoft and Google should then add a 'killbit' that disables the technology in their browsers after that date. According to Stamos it's the only way to stop Flash usage on websites, to separate Flash dependent technologies and to upgrade the entire eco-system at once.

The remark of Stamos doesn't appear to be related to the recent security leaks in Adobe Flash Player. He mainly targets Flash as a web technology. Developers and software companies don't upgrade to HTML5 because they expect Flash to be supported forever, according to Stamos.

When Adobe announces a date from which it discontinues Flash, the web can get rid of it's Flash dependence and switch to HTML5, he argues.
