You might have heard about Boot to Gecko, a mobile phone operating system (OS) that is under development by Mozilla, the developers of the Firefox browser. Today they have announced that their mobile OS will be renamed to Firefox OS and that it will become available on phones of Alcatel and ZTE. Also the network operators Deutsche Telekom, Etisalat, Smart, Sprint, Telecom Italia, Telefónica and Telenor have given their support to the OS. Firefox OS is a new mobile operating system that is fully based on open web standards / HTML 5.
The first phone will likely become available in Brazil in Q1 2013. Brazil seems to be a logical choice as Firefox OS is aimed at emerging markets, due to the way it works it will have lower resource usage than current mobile OS’es and it’s therefore expected that the OS will run on cheaper hardware. One does wonder what cheaper hardware will be in 2013, with the current developments on phone hardware….
