In the fourth quarter of 2015 about 4.5 million Windows smartphones have been sold, according to market research company Gartner. That's about half of the number of phones sold in the same timeframe last year, when 10.4 million phones were sold.
Until 2014 the number of phones with mobile versions of Windows was slowly increasing. Analysts of IDC previously stated they don't expect that the marketshare of Windows will grow before 2019.
There are currently only litte smartphones that run on Microsoft's latest mobile operating system Windows 10 Mobile. According to several rumors Microsoft will only release two new Windows 10 Mobile smartphones this year.
Budget phone Lumia 650 was released earlier this week. Later this year it's expected Microsoft will also release a premium model that will be named Surface Phone.
