HDMI coming to Apple Mac mini?

Apple's tiny Mac mini might be getting a lounge room-friendly upgrade, with two HDMI-enabled prototypes making the rounds.

Apple's cheapest Mac is often deployed as a media centre, despite that fact Mac OS lacks Blu-ray movie playback and restricts MPEG-2 hardware decoding to Apple's native applications. In a move to make the Mac mini more lounge room-friendly, Apple is planing to replace the legacy DVI connector with a HDMI port, reports AppleInsider.

At least one of the Mac mini prototypes is said to include Nvidia's MCP89 chipset, which is the successor to the existing MCP79 (or GeForce 9400M)  chipset found alongside Intel's Core 2 Duo processors across the majority of Apple's existing Mac product line.

Apple has reportedly also designed a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adaptor but it requires an updated version of Mini DisplayPort that provides audio output.
